People assume a glass railing is high-maintenance. It is the opposite — five minutes a week, one product to buy, and a short annual check. Here is the whole routine, plus the four things that will permanently ruin your panels.
Good news: there is almost nothing to do
Wood needs re-staining every couple of years and metal needs repainting on a schedule. Glass needs neither. There is no finish to maintain — only a surface to keep clean.
The weekly clean
For the glass:
- Warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap
- Microfibre cloth or a window squeegee
- Rinse with clean water
- Dry with microfibre so you do not leave streaks
For the hardware
A stainless cleaner spray once a month. Our hardware is #2205 duplex stainless (marine grade, PREN 35) — it resists corrosion on its own, but a monthly wipe keeps the finish from dulling in salt air.
Products to avoid, without exception
- Hydrochloric acid — attacks the glass surface
- Abrasive cleaners and scouring pads — they scratch, permanently
- Razor blades to scrape off debris
- Undiluted bleach
The pro trick for hard-water spots
Mix 50/50 white vinegar and water, let it sit for five minutes, then work it off with a microfibre cloth. That handles the mineral haze sprinklers and pool splash leave behind.
Once a year, check three things
- Torque on the Allen screws in the spigots — re-tighten them the way our installation guide describes
- The glass edges and corners, for chips or cracks
- The gaskets and seals, especially on pool fences
